Angwin
Angwin is a tiny community perched at 1,800 feet on Howell Mountain, one of the most respected mountain appellations in Napa Valley. There is almost no tourist infrastructure here, but the wines and the views make the drive worthwhile for the right kind of visitor.
Up on Howell Mountain, above the fog and the crowds
Angwin sits about 8 miles east of St. Helena on Howell Mountain Road, and the drive up tells you everything you need to know about the place. The valley floor disappears behind you, the fog stays below, and by the time you reach the top you’re in a completely different world. The views stretch across the valley in both directions, and the air is noticeably cooler and cleaner than what you left behind.
The community itself is centered around Pacific Union College, a small school perched at the summit crossroads, and a single market. There are no restaurants, no hotels, no tasting rooms you can walk into off the street. What there are is a handful of exceptional wineries that make some of the most age-worthy wines in Napa Valley, all requiring advance reservations.
Howell Mountain is one of those appellations that wine geeks know and casual visitors overlook. The rocky volcanic soils and elevation produce wines with a firmness and structure that’s distinct from anything made on the valley floor. If that sounds like your kind of discovery, Angwin is worth the detour.

Angwin
Howell Mountain produces some of Napa Valley's most intense and structured wines. The elevation, rocky volcanic soils, and sun exposure above the fog line create Cabernets that age for decades. Small production and appointment-only is the rule.
Essentially none. Angwin is a college town crossroads with a small market. Eat before you head up or plan to descend to St. Helena or Calistoga for meals.
Quiet, remote, and genuinely off the tourist circuit. Angwin rewards visitors who plan ahead and don't mind a winding mountain road. If you're looking for a crowd, this isn't it.
