Modern & Chic
Napa
The city of Napa is the valley's largest town and its most urban, with a walkable downtown, 40-plus tasting rooms, a serious restaurant scene, and nightlife the smaller towns can't match. It's also the most practical base for first-time visitors.
Wine country with a real city underneath it
The city of Napa doesn’t always get its due. Most people drive straight through on their way up Highway 29, treating it as a waypoint rather than a destination. That’s a mistake. Downtown Napa has been quietly transforming for the past two decades, and what’s here now is genuinely impressive: a riverside district with dozens of tasting rooms, a food market that locals actually use, music venues, art installations, and restaurants good enough to anchor a trip around.
It’s also the most practical entry point into wine country for first-timers. The tasting rooms downtown are approachable, walk-in friendly, and clustered close enough together that you can cover several in an afternoon on foot. That’s a meaningful advantage if you’re not sure yet what you like or don’t want to lock yourself into a reservation schedule before you’ve gotten your bearings.
The city is also where most of the valley’s support infrastructure lives: the best selection of hotels at multiple price points, the Wine Train depot, rental car pickups, and easy freeway access in every direction. If you’re planning a multi-day trip and want flexibility, staying in Napa gives you more of it than anywhere else in the valley.

Napa
Napa has more tasting rooms per square mile than anywhere else in the valley, and most don't require a reservation. It's the easiest place to taste spontaneously and compare wines across multiple producers in a single afternoon.
One of the best and most diverse dining lineups in wine country. From quick bites at the riverfront market to Michelin-recognized restaurants, the food scene here keeps up with the wine.
Lively and walkable, especially downtown. The city moves faster than the smaller up-valley towns, with more foot traffic, more nightlife, and a lot more going on after dark. It's wine country with an urban beat.
