Napa
Groth Vineyards & Winery
An Oakville landmark known for consistently polished wines, deep roots in Napa history, and hospitality that feels warm rather than formal.
Overview
Right along Highway 29 in Oakville, Groth is one of those wineries that feels familiar even on your first visit. Cabernet Sauvignon is the centerpiece, supported by Sauvignon Blanc and a handful of estate wines that showcase the valley’s strengths. We often suggest Groth to guests who want a true Napa classic without the pressure or polish of a more showy stop.
History
Groth’s Napa story began in 1982, when Dennis and Judy Groth purchased a vineyard in Oakville that would soon become legendary. Just a few years later, their 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon earned Napa Valley’s first perfect 100-point score, putting Groth firmly on the map. Despite that milestone, the winery has remained grounded and family-run, with the next generation continuing the focus on quality, consistency, and approachability.
Sustainability
Groth takes sustainability seriously, focusing on responsible vineyard management, water conservation, and long-term land health. Their practices are guided by the idea that great vineyards should be protected for future generations, aligning naturally with the winery’s family-owned mindset.
Atmosphere
Comfortable, open, and welcoming. The tasting room is bright and relaxed, with vineyard views that remind you exactly where you are. It feels polished but not precious, making it easy to settle in and enjoy the moment. There’s a sense of activity and life here, but it never feels chaotic.
Experience
Guests consistently comment on how friendly and easy the Groth experience feels. Tastings are well-organized and informative, but never overwhelming. The staff does a great job explaining what you’re tasting in plain language, and the overall pace works well for both casual visitors and more serious wine fans. It’s a solid choice for mixed groups with different levels of wine knowledge.
