Varietal Overview

Chardonnay is one of the most common white wines you’ll see in tasting rooms, so knowing it helps you feel prepared. It started in France, but it’s grown all over California (especially in Napa and Sonoma), often as a standalone wine rather than a blend. The big thing to know is that Chardonnay can taste very different from one bottle to the next, so there’s no single “right” style.

Flavors:

  • Green apple
  • Pear
  • Lemon or citrus zest
  • Pineapple or ripe apple
  • Vanilla or baking spice
  • Butter or toasted bread

Taste Profile:

  • Body: Medium to full-bodied, meaning it feels a bit richer and heavier than crisp whites like Pinot Grigio
  • Acidity: Medium, so it can feel refreshing but not sharp
  • Texture: Can be smooth and creamy or clean and crisp
  • Oak Influence: Some taste toasty or vanilla-like from oak barrels, others don’t
  • Finish: Medium length, with flavors that linger gently

Serving Suggestions:

  • Temperature: Serve cool, around 50–55°F. That’s slightly chilled, not ice- cold
  • Glassware: A standard white wine glass works well. A slightly wider bowl helps you smell more of the aromas
  • Opening Tip: No need to decant. Just open and let it sit for a few minutes if it smells tight at first.

Food Pairing:

  • Roast chicken or turkey
  • Pasta with cream or cheese sauces
  • Grilled fish or shrimp
  • Simple cheeses like brie or mild cheddar
