Napa
Quintessa
Rutherford’s terroir-driven jewel with world-class wine in a gorgeous private estate
Overview
Quintessa feels like stepping into a living Napa Valley story, a 280-acre vineyard in eastern Rutherford where every slope, soil, and microclimate gets to speak. The estate crafts one flagship wine each vintage from classic Bordeaux varieties grown organically and biodynamically, and the tasting experiences here are deeply tied to the land’s natural rhythm.
History
Quintessa began in the late 1980s when Agustin and Valeria Huneeus set out to create one of Napa’s great wine estates by honoring the land itself. Vines were planted around 1990, and from the start the focus was on respectful farming and letting this remarkable property (with its hills, valleys and varied exposures) shape the wine. Over decades Quintessa has grown its identity around biodiversity, thoughtful farming, and wines that reflect terroir first.
Sustainability
Farming at Quintessa is organic from the roots up, with biodynamic practices in place since the mid-1990s. The estate preserves more than 100 acres of natural woodland, fosters soil health and ecological balance, and even designs its winery around gravity flow to reduce handling and energy. The approach here treats the property as a living system, not just a vineyard.
Atmosphere
Quintessa doesn’t feel like a busy tasting room on the Silverado Trail, it’s more intimate, calm and contemplative. You’ll often be on terraces or under open-air pavilions with sweeping vineyard views, or touring vineyard blocks and caves with one host. The architecture blends into the hillsides, and the whole vibe feels like a quietly beautiful Napa afternoon dedicated to terroir, wine, and thoughtful conversation.
Experience
Tastings are by appointment only and center on connecting you to the estate’s story. Options include guided sessions with current and library vintages, barrel samples and explanations of vineyard blocks; tours through the gravity-flow winery and 17,000 square feet of caves; and relaxed walks with insights into organic and biodynamic farming. Most experiences take about 90 minutes and are small group or private.
Visitors consistently talk about Quintessa as serious quality with sincere hospitality, wines that reward attention, hosts who know the estate intimately, and an atmosphere that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
