Overview

Spottswoode is one of those Napa places that feels instantly grounding. Tucked just north of St. Helena, right at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains, this historic estate blends old-school Napa charm with thoughtful, modern farming. The focus is squarely on estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, wines that are powerful without being loud and refined without feeling precious. Visiting here feels less like checking off a famous winery and more like being welcomed into a place that genuinely cares about what it puts into the bottle.

History

The roots here go way back. The property dates to 1882, but the modern story really begins in 1972 when the Novak family purchased and revitalized the estate. Mary Novak became one of Napa Valley’s early female wine leaders, releasing the first estate Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982. Long before organic farming became fashionable, Spottswoode committed to it in 1985, guided by a belief that great wine starts with healthy land. Today, the Novak family’s second generation carries that vision forward, staying remarkably true to the estate’s original spirit.

Sustainability

Sustainability isn’t a talking point here, it’s a foundation. Spottswoode has farmed organically since the mid-1980s and is now certified biodynamic and regenerative organic. These practices are about more than certifications; they’re about building soil health, supporting biodiversity, and ensuring the vineyard thrives for generations. You can taste the care in the wines, especially in how balanced and alive they feel.

Atmosphere

Expect historic stone buildings, a Victorian farmhouse, lush gardens, and vineyard views that feel calm rather than showy. The setting is beautiful, but it never tries to steal the spotlight from the wine. Tastings are by appointment only, which keeps things unhurried and personal. It’s polished, yes, but in a warm, welcoming way that encourages you to slow down and actually pay attention to what’s in your glass.

Experience

Guests consistently talk about how thoughtful and unpretentious the experience feels. Tastings are conversational and educational without being overwhelming, even for visitors who don’t consider themselves wine experts. You’ll typically taste through estate wines while learning how the vineyard, the vintage, and the family’s farming choices shape what you’re drinking. Many people leave surprised by how much they loved the Sauvignon Blanc, and impressed by how balanced and age-worthy the Cabernet feels, even when it’s young.
