Soda Rock Winery
A testament to the enduring spirit of wine, history, and innovation, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a tapestry of flavors and stories
Overview
Soda Rock Winery, standing proudly along Highway 128, is a beacon of resilience and charm in Alexander Valley. With its iconic water tower and a history woven into the very fabric of the valley, the winery occupies a space that was once the first General Store and Post Office of the area, established over 150 years ago. The fusion of moss-covered stone walls with modern elements creates a captivating ambiance, a symbol of the winery’s journey through time, especially after the devastating fire of 2019.
History
Ken and Diane Wilson, proprietors with a deep-rooted love for boutique wineries, took Soda Rock under their wing in 2000. The once dilapidated structure, a silent witness to the valley’s bustling past, underwent a transformative restoration. The Wilsons, also owners of several renowned Sonoma County wineries, infused Soda Rock with their passion, revitalizing it with reclaimed and eco-friendly materials. Despite the tragic fire in 2019, the winery’s spirit remained unscathed, rising like a phoenix to continue its legacy.
Sustainability
The Wilsons’ dedication to sustainability is evident in the restoration of Soda Rock Winery. Using reclaimed and eco-friendly materials, they have not only preserved a piece of history but have also demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship, aligning with the ethos of responsible winemaking.
Atmosphere
Soda Rock Winery marries the allure of its historical roots with a flair for the contemporary. The tasting room, an open-plan marvel, is adorned with elements like a wooden bar from a local tavern and round tables crafted from wooden wine vats. The whimsical inclusion of a portrait of model Amber Valletta adds a touch of modern quirkiness, creating an environment that’s both inviting and intriguing.
Experience
Visiting Soda Rock is an exploration of the unique and the delightful. The wines, ranging from a buttery Sauvignon Blanc to robust red Bordeaux varietals, Zinfandel, and Primitivo, are guided by the philosophy of French-born winemaker Antoine Favero. Antoine’s belief in nurturing the wine to express its varietal character and terroir resonates in each sip. The tasting room staff, friendly and knowledgeable, ensure a memorable journey through Soda Rock’s diverse wine offerings.
Unique Elements
Soda Rock’s distinct approach to winemaking, coupled with its architectural charm, sets it apart in Sonoma’s landscape. The winery’s commitment to preserving its historical essence while embracing modernity is evident in every detail. Its resilience in the face of adversity, rebuilding post-fire, adds a layer of depth and inspiration to the Soda Rock story.
