Details about Yountville AVA

Overview:

Yountville is one of Napa Valley’s smallest appellations, but it sits right at the heart of the valley and captures a beautiful middle ground between power and finesse. Wines from here tend to feel polished and complete, with ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and a sense of balance that makes them especially enjoyable at the table. If Napa had a “sweet spot,” many people would point right here.

Location:

The Yountville AVA surrounds the town of Yountville in central Napa Valley, just north of Oak Knoll and south of Oakville. It stretches from the valley floor up into the lower western hills near the Mayacamas Mountains. Elevations range from about 50 feet near the Napa River to around 1,000 feet as vineyards climb the slopes, giving the area a mix of flat valley sites and gently rising hillside vineyards.

Terroir Details

Elevation: ~50–1,000 feet. Lower sites offer generous fruit, while hillside vineyards add structure and depth.

Climate: Warm days with cool nights. Afternoon breezes funnel in from San Pablo Bay, helping grapes cool down at night and hold onto freshness.

Soils: Gravelly loam, volcanic material, and alluvial soils. These well-drained soils encourage deep roots and help create wines with both richness and definition.

Sun Exposure: Excellent, especially on west-facing slopes. Plenty of sunshine ripens fruit evenly without pushing sugars too high.

History:

Yountville is one of the oldest wine-growing areas in Napa Valley. George Yount planted vines here in 1838, making this one of the first places in the valley where grapes were grown. Over time, growers realized this area had a unique balance of warmth and cooling influence, and in 1999, Yountville earned its own AVA to reflect how consistently distinctive its wines had become.

Interesting Facts:

  • It’s one of Napa Valley’s smallest AVAs, but also one of the most historically important.
  • Many Yountville vineyards sit close to the Napa River, which helps moderate temperature swings.
  • The town of Yountville is famous for fine dining, making this AVA especially known for food-friendly wines.

Signature Feature:

The defining feature of Yountville is balance. Warm enough to fully ripen Cabernet Sauvignon, yet cool enough at night to preserve freshness, this area consistently produces wines that feel complete and harmonious rather than extreme in any one direction.
