Varietal Overview

Gewürtztraminer is a very expressive white grape originally from Europe, best known for big floral aromas and a slightly spicy personality. In Napa and Sonoma, you will usually find it made in a fresh, aromatic style that highlights fragrance more than heaviness. It is most often a standalone wine, and it really stands out in tastings because it smells intense even before you take a sip.

Flavors:

  • Lychee
  • Rose petal or orange blossom
  • Ripe pear
  • Peach or apricot
  • Ginger or baking spice

Taste Profile:

  • Body: Medium, meaning it feels rounded but not heavy
  • Acidity: Medium to low, so it feels soft rather than sharp
  • Texture: Smooth and almost oily, in a pleasant way
  • Finish: Medium, with floral spice notes lingering

Serving Suggestions:

  • Temperature: 45-50°F, similar to how you would chill Sauvignon Blanc. If it’s too warm, it can feel heavy
  • Glass: A standard white wine glass works well and keeps the aromas focused
  • Decanting: Not needed. This wine is all about freshness and aroma right out of the bottle

Food Pairing:

  • Thai or Vietnamese dishes, especially with ginger or mild spice
  • Indian food, like curries with aromatic spices
  • Soft cheeses such as brie or triple-cream styles
