Varietal Overview

Grenache comes from Spain originally, but in California, you will often see it on its own or blended with other Rhône-style grapes like Syrah and Mourvèdre. In Napa and Sonoma, it tends to feel lighter and fruit-forward compared to heavier reds. When you taste Grenache, expect something lively, smooth, and friendly rather than bold or intense.

Flavors:

  • Strawberry or raspberry
  • Red cherry
  • Watermelon or cranberry
  • White pepper or mild spice
  • Dried herbs, like thyme or rosemary

Taste Profile:

  • Body: Light to medium-bodied, so it feels lighter than Cabernet or Malbec
  • Acidity: Medium to medium-high, which gives it a fresh, juicy feel
  • Tannins: Low to medium. The drying sensation is gentle and smooth
  • Texture: Silky and soft, often with a slightly juicy or flowing feel
  • Finish: Medium, clean, and refreshing rather than heavy

Serving Suggestions:

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool, around 55–60°F. A short chill in the fridge makes it feel extra refreshing
  • Glass: Use a standard red wine glass. You do not need anything fancy for this grape.
  • Decanting: Grenache usually doesn’t need decanting. It is meant to be enjoyed without much preparation

Food Pairing:

  • Roast chicken or turkey
  • Grilled vegetables or veggie skewers
  • Sausages or lighter barbecue dishes.
