Varietal Overview

Roussanne is a white grape originally from Southern France, and in Napa and Sonoma you will usually see it either on its own or blended with Marsanne. It is known for depth and texture rather than crispiness, so this is a good wine to expect richness and complexity. If you enjoy fuller white wines but want something a little different from Chardonnay, Roussanne is a great place to start.

Flavors:

  • Ripe pear and apple
  • Peach or apricot
  • Honey or beeswax
  • Almond or hazelnut
  • Herbal notes, like chamomile or dried herbs
  • A light floral note, similar to white flowers

Taste Profile:

  • Body: Medium to full-bodied. It feels round and substantial
  • Tannins: White wines do not have tannins like reds, but Roussanne can feel gently grippy from skin contact or texture
  • Acidity: Medium acidity. It is not sharp or zippy, more soft and balanced
  • Texture: Creamy and layered, often with a slightly oily feel
  • Finish: Long and savory, with nutty and herbal notes lingering

Serving Suggestions:

  • Temperature: Serve slightly chilled, around 50 to 55°F, so it stays expressive but not cold
  • Glass: A white wine glass with a slightly wider bowl helps show its aromas
  • Decanting: No need to decant, but letting it warm slightly in the glass can really help

Food Pairing:

  • Roast chicken or turkey
  • Creamy pastas or risotto
  • Soft cheeses or dishes with nuts
