Varietal Overview

Pinot Noir is a red wine that feels smooth and graceful rather than heavy. It comes from France originally, but you’ll see it often in cooler parts of California, like Sonoma and coastal areas, sometimes on its own and sometimes in small blends. When you spot Pinot Noir in a tasting room, you can expect a red that’s easy to enjoy, even if you usually prefer lighter wines.

Flavors:

  • Cherry and raspberry
  • Strawberry
  • Mushroom, an earthy smell like damp leaves after rain
  • Light spice, like cinnamon or clove
  • A gentle hint of vanilla or toast from aging in oak barrels

Taste Profile:

  • Body: Light to medium. That means it feels smooth and not heavy
  • Acidity: Medium to high. This gives the wine a fresh, lively fit
  • Tannins: Low. Tannins are what make your mouth feel dry, and Pinot Noir keeps that soft
  • Texture: Silky and smooth
  • Finish: Clean and refreshing, not overpowering

Serving Suggestions:

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool, around 55 to 60°F. If it’s been on your counter, a short 15-minute chill in the fridge helps
  • Glass: A wider wine glass is ideal. It gives the aromas room to open up
  • Decanting: Usually not needed. This wine is ready to enjoy as soon as you open it

Food Pairing:

  • Roast chicken or turkey
  • Salmon or other fatty fish
  • Mushroom dishes, like risotto or pasta
