Napa
Black Cat Vineyard
A tiny, family-driven Napa winery focused on small-lot wines with depth, elegance, and a very hands-on spirit.
Overview
Black Cat Vineyard is one of those places you don’t stumble into by accident. It’s a micro-producer working with estate fruit in Coombsville and select Napa sites, crafting limited wines that reflect careful farming and thoughtful winemaking. This is Napa at a quieter volume, more about connection and character than spectacle.
History
Black Cat was founded in 1996 by Tracey Reichow, who came to Napa without a traditional wine background and learned by doing everything herself. She planted her Coombsville vineyard, worked the vines, and slowly built the winery from the ground up, releasing her first commercial vintage in 2004. Her approach was deeply personal and very physical. She believed great wine started with being present in the vineyard. That philosophy still defines Black Cat today, even after her passing in 2023.
Sustainability
Sustainability here isn’t branded or buzzed about. It shows up in scale and care. Small vineyards, low yields, close attention to vine health, and a refusal to rush the process. Because production is so limited, decisions are made thoughtfully, with long-term vineyard health always in mind.
Atmosphere
Quiet, intimate, and reflective. The space is modest and welcoming, with the focus squarely on the wine in the glass and the story behind it. It feels like being invited into someone’s personal project rather than visiting a public attraction.
Experience
Visits are by appointment only and feel more like a private conversation than a tasting room stop. Guests consistently appreciate how calm and focused the experience is. You’re encouraged to take your time, ask questions, and really sit with the wines. There’s no rush, no crowd, and no pressure to perform wine knowledge.
Unique Elements
- Extremely small production, often just a few hundred cases per wine
- Estate Coombsville fruit, plus select Napa sites that bring range and nuance
- Numbered bottles that reinforce how limited and personal each release is
- A genuine backstory tied to a real black cat, giving the winery its name and charm
