Napa
Beringer Vineyards
Beringer is one of Napa Valley’s oldest wineries, known for its historic stone buildings, hillside caves, and a wide range of classic Napa wines that feel both approachable and storied.
Overview
Right off Highway 29 in St. Helena, Beringer is often the first winery people ever visit in Napa and for good reason. Founded in the 1800s, it combines deep history with an easy, welcoming experience and a lineup of wines that range from everyday favorites to serious, age-worthy bottlings. It’s a place where Napa’s past and present comfortably coexist.
History
Beringer dates back to 1876, when brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer arrived from Germany and built one of Napa’s first gravity-flow wineries. Their hand-dug caves, carved deep into the hillside, are still in use today and remain one of the estate’s most memorable features. Over the decades, Beringer survived Prohibition, helped shape Napa’s post-war wine revival, and became a benchmark for American Cabernet Sauvignon.
Sustainability
Beringer focuses on long-term vineyard health through responsible farming, water conservation, and soil management practices. While the estate is historic, its approach to vineyard care continues to evolve with an eye toward preserving Napa Valley for future generations.
Atmosphere
The estate feels grand but not intimidating. You’ll see historic stone buildings, manicured lawns, towering trees, and vineyard backdrops that make it easy to imagine Napa a century ago. Despite its size and popularity, there are plenty of quiet corners where it still feels calm and classic rather than crowded.
Experience
Beringer offers a polished but approachable visit that works just as well for first-timers as it does for longtime wine lovers. Tastings are well organized, friendly, and informative without being overwhelming, and the historic caves and grounds add a sense of occasion to even a simple glass of wine. Guests often appreciate how easy and welcoming the experience feels, especially for groups or those new to Napa.
