Cakebread Cellars
Cakebread Cellars is a family-run classic that pairs beautifully balanced wines with one of the most genuinely welcoming experiences in Napa Valley.
Overview
Located just south of St. Helena along Highway 29, Cakebread Cellars has been welcoming guests for decades, and it shows in the best way. Everything here feels practiced, calm, and sincere. We love how the wines are consistently delicious without trying to be flashy. This is a winery that understands that great wine is about enjoyment first, and education second, never the other way around.
History
Cakebread Cellars began in 1973 when Jack and Dolores Cakebread bought the property almost on a whim. Jack was a photographer, not a winemaker, and the land was originally meant to be a subject, not a business. But curiosity turned into passion, and passion turned into one of Napa’s most respected family wineries. From the beginning, the Cakebreads focused on hospitality, food, and wines that fit naturally at the table. That philosophy still guides everything they do today.
Sustainability
Sustainability is deeply integrated into how Cakebread farms and operates. Their estate vineyards are thoughtfully managed with soil health, water conservation, and long-term viability in mind. These practices support not just environmental goals, but also the clean, expressive style that defines their wines.
Atmosphere
The setting feels classic and comfortable, with well-kept gardens, shady trees, and inviting indoor spaces. There’s a quiet confidence here. Nothing feels rushed or overly styled. Tastings often happen seated, and the pace encourages conversation. It’s polished without being formal, the kind of place where you settle in and realize you’re smiling without trying.
Experience
Guests consistently mention how easy and enjoyable the visit feels. Tastings are clear, friendly, and well-paced, with explanations that make sense whether you’re new to wine or not. Many people love how often food pairings are part of the experience, reinforcing Cakebread’s belief that wine should be enjoyed with a meal. It’s especially great for couples or groups with mixed levels of wine knowledge.
