Varietal Overview

Viognier is a white grape known for its beautiful aromas and smooth, rounded feel. It comes from Southern France, but in Napa and Sonoma you will usually find it bottled on its own or used in small amounts to add aroma to blends. When you see Viognier, expect a wine that smells very expressive and tastes gentle rather than sharp.

Flavors:

  • Ripe peach and apricot
  • Orange blossom or honeysuckle
  • Pear or melon
  • A hint of citrus peel
  • Ginger or soft spice
  • A light creamy note

Taste Profile:

  • Body: Medium to full-bodied. It feels soft and rounded rather than light
  • Tannins: White wines do not have tannins like reds, but Viognier can feel slightly grippy if there is skin contact
  • Acidity: Low to medium acidity. It feels smooth and gentle, not crisp
  • Texture: Silky and plush, sometimes creamy
  • Finish: Fragrant and lingering, with floral and stone fruit notes

Serving Suggestions:

  • Temperature: Serve lightly chilled, around 50 to 55°F, so the aromas shine
  • Glass: A white wine glass with a wider bowl helps capture the floral notes
  • Decanting: No need to decant, but letting it warm slightly in the glass helps it open

Food Pairing:

  • Roast chicken or turkey
  • Thai or Indian dishes with gentle spice
  • Soft cheeses or dishes with herbs
