Details about Knights Valley AVA

Overview:

Knights Valley sits on the far eastern edge of Sonoma County, tucked between the Mayacamas Mountains and Mount St. Helena. Warm days and cooling nights help grapes reach full ripeness while keeping structure and acidity, which is why bold Cabernet Sauvignon and rich Bordeaux blends often shine here.

Location:

This narrow valley lies northeast of the Alexander Valley and west of Calistoga in Napa Valley. It occupies roughly 37,000 acres of rolling hills and mountain foothills, with vineyards rising from about 300 to more than 900 feet in elevation as you move toward the Mayacamas slopes.

Terroir Details

Elevation: From ~300 to 900+ feet above sea level. Hillsides and slopes add sun exposure and airflow that help wines develop complexity.

Climate: The warmest growing region in Sonoma County, with sunny afternoons and cooler nights. This contrast lets grapes ripen fully while preserving acidity and balance.

Soils: Volcanic legacy from Mount St. Helena creates iron-rich, well-draining soils (including rhyolitic tuff and rocky alluvium). These soils stress vines in the right way to make concentrated fruit.

Sun Exposure: Plenty of direct sun during the long growing season encourages ripeness and bold flavors. Cooler breezes at night help keep grapes balanced.

History:

Originally part of a Mexican land grant in the mid-1800s, this valley became known as Knights Valley after settler Thomas B. Knight planted early vineyards here. Commercial wine production waned through Prohibition and mid-20th century, but it revived in the 1970s and ’80s as growers recognized the valley’s distinct climate and soils. In 1983 it gained AVA status, making it one of Sonoma’s original viticultural areas.

Interesting Facts:

  • It is the warmest AVA in Sonoma County because it is shielded from direct Pacific Ocean fog and cool winds.
  • Only a handful of wineries have tasting rooms in the valley itself, which means many Knights Valley wines are discovered through visits to winery homes or by appointment.
  • Volcanic soils here are ancient and varied, imparting mineral nuance and structure to wines.
  • It sits right on the border with Napa, often confusing visitors who think it’s part of Napa’s AVAs

Signature Feature:

The big idea to remember about Knights Valley is warm, dramatic ripening with cool nighttime air and volcanic soils. That combo gives Cabernet and other grapes both ripe fruit and firm backbone.

Wines from Knights Valley tend to offer ripe dark fruit (think blackberry and cassis), rich structure, and layered spice and mineral notes. Even reds with bold flavors keep bright acidity thanks to cooling nights, while whites like Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay show clarity and energy alongside richer fruit.

Food Pairings:

  • Grilled ribeye with herbs and peppercorn sauce
  • Roasted mushrooms and polenta
  • Lamb chops with rosemary and garlic
  • Mature cheeses like aged Gouda or Manchego

Signature Wines:

Knights Valley is particularly celebrated for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends that show both richness and finesse. The warm days help develop deep fruit flavors, and the cool evenings keep the wines balanced and ageworthy. Whites from this region also benefit from the long growing season, showing bright fruit and crisp finish.
