Details about Bennett Valley AVA

Overview:

Bennett Valley is one of Sonoma County’s smallest and newest appellations. You’ll feel the cool marine influence here even though it sits inland, thanks to breezes funneling through nearby mountain gaps. The result is a long growing season that builds flavor without losing acidity.

Location:

This valley sits just southeast of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County, nestled between Taylor Mountain to the west, Sonoma Mountain to the south, and Bennett Peak to the east. The AVA lies entirely within the larger Sonoma Valley AVA and even overlaps parts of both the Sonoma Mountain and Sonoma Coast AVAs.

Terroir Details

Elevation: Most vineyards sit between about 400 and 1,100 feet, which helps them stay above frost and fog yet still benefit from cooling breezes.

Climate: Cool marine air funnels into the valley through Crane Canyon, keeping growing seasons long and temperatures balanced so grapes develop ripe flavors with bright acidity.

Soils: Volcanic and rocky soils mixed with clay and loam provide good drainage and gentle stress on vines, concentrating flavor and structure in the grapes.

Sun Exposure: Rolling hills and benches give vineyards a variety of exposures, helping different grapes ripen evenly through the season.

History:

Grapes have been part of Bennett Valley’s landscape for over a century, but modern winemaking took off in the 1970s. After years of growers showcasing the area’s distinct cool-climate qualities, Bennett Valley earned its own AVA status in 2003 thanks to a petition led by Matanzas Creek Winery.

Interesting Facts:

  • Bennett Valley is one of Sonoma’s coolest inland AVAs, even though it sits well inland from the Pacific
  • Vineyards are small and often family-owned, giving wines a handcrafted, terroir-driven feel
  • The valley’s unique marine influence comes through a break in the coastal hills called the Petaluma Gap
  • Though small, Bennett Valley fruit appears in sought-after artisan wines beyond its own tasting rooms

Signature Feature:

If you remember one thing about Bennett Valley, it’s this: cool marine breezes meet volcanic soils to give wines both ripe flavor and lively acidity, creating harmony in reds and whites alike.
