Overview

If you love Napa Cab but want to understand why certain bottles feel deeper and more layered, The Terraces is a special stop. Based in Rutherford, this is a focused, low-key winery that works with steep, terraced vineyards across Napa’s hillsides. Everything here moves at an unhurried pace, from the way the wines are made to how tastings unfold. It’s not flashy, and that’s exactly the point.

History

The Terraces is a project from the Huneeus family, long-time Napa growers known for their deep respect for land and patience in winemaking. The idea grew out of years spent farming some of Napa’s most demanding hillside sites. Terraced vineyards are difficult to farm and easy to walk away from, but they believed these slopes could produce wines with clarity and character that valley floors simply can’t replicate. The winery was built to support that belief, not to compete for attention.

Sustainability

Farming is treated as stewardship here, not branding. Many of the vineyards are farmed organically, with an emphasis on soil health, minimal intervention, and practices that respect the long-term life of the land. The steep terrain makes shortcuts impossible, so everything is done carefully and intentionally. Sustainability shows up in the wines as balance and restraint rather than as a talking point.

Atmosphere

The space feels modern but grounded, with clean lines, natural materials, and wide views that remind you how steep and dramatic these vineyards really are. Tastings are intimate and quiet. You’ll likely find yourself sitting comfortably, glass in hand, talking through the wines without distractions or crowds. It’s peaceful, focused, and refreshing if you’ve already done a few busier Napa stops.

Experience

Guests consistently leave feeling like they actually learned something without ever feeling lectured. Tastings are thoughtful and paced, with plenty of time to revisit wines as they open up. This is a great stop if you enjoy asking questions or comparing how site and elevation shape flavor. It’s best for couples, small groups, or anyone who appreciates a calm, personal experience rather than a party atmosphere.

Unique Elements

  • Terraced hillside vineyards that bring natural structure and depth to the wines
  • Single-varietal focus almost entirely on Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Small production that allows close attention to every detail
These aren’t wines trying to impress you in the first five minutes. They reward patience, just like the places they come from
