Varietal Overview

Petite Sirah has a long history in California and is especially loved for its intensity and structure. You will often see it bottled on its own, though it is also used in blends to add color and strength. When you taste Petite Sirah, expect something dark, concentrated, and serious (but still very enjoyable if you like fuller reds).

Flavors:

  • Blackberry or black plum
  • Blueberry or boysenberry
  • Black pepper
  • Cocoa powder or dark chocolate
  • Espresso

Taste Profile:

  • Body: Full-bodied, meaning it feels rich and weighty in your mouth
  • Acidity: Medium, which keeps the wine from feeling flat despite its depth
  • Tannins: High. The drying sensation on your gums is firm and noticeable
  • Texture: Dense and gripping. It can feel chewy or powerful rather than smooth
  • Finish: Long and intense, with dark flavors lingering well after you swallow

Serving Suggestions:

  • Temperature: Serve around 60–65°F. Too warm can make it feel heavy, so a short chill helps.
  • Glass: Use a large red wine glass to give the aromas space to open up
  • Decanting: Decant for 30-60 minutes if possible. This softens the firm texture and helps everything come together

Food Pairing:

  • Grilled steak or short ribs
  • Barbecue with smoky sauces
  • Aged cheeses like blue cheese or sharp cheddar
